Last Monday, I got the call for my first placement child. It’s hard to explain exactly how I felt, but nausea was probably the first physical feeling. While this may not sound like the happy story you thought you were going to get, just wait for it. It’s coming! Immediately after the nausea, I felt like I was going to cry. Just a month after finishing my classes and certification, it was time for my first placement. He is a three year old boy who will be coming to stay with me this week. Here are some things for you all to know about my first call.
What information was I given?
I was told his name, age and the circumstance that led to him being in foster care. That’s it! I’ll be honest, I was kind of expecting a whole back story but that wasn’t available yet. At that point, I was pretty much asked whether or not I would take him. Even though I had already set the room up for a girl (jumped the gun on that one) and had no idea about daycare….I said yes.
When is he coming?
Well, this is where it gets a little complicated. I would have been able to take him that day and find daycare at a later time, but life didn’t workout that way. My coworker broke her leg the weekend before school started and it is close to impossible for me to take time off. I asked if there was anywhere that he could go temporarily so that I could find daycare for him and they said yes.
How hard was it to find daycare?
I don’t know about the other moms out there, but finding daycare last minute is not an easy thing to do. There are waiting lists and deadlines….all of which are impossible to plan for when you don’t know when you’re getting a child or how old the child will be. Luckily, I was able to find a private daycare, close to my house, with amazing hours.
Back to the second question: When is he coming?
The goal is for him to come within the next couple of days. The hard part about it is getting all the necessary documentation for him before I lose the daycare spot.
How did I prepare for his arrival?
I’ll be honest, I may have gone a little overboard. I had a foster shower a few weeks ago and my family bought a lot of the necessities such as the car seat and bed. I waited until I knew the gender and age to take to Amazon. Also, there was a consignment sale this weekend. I cleared my weekend thinking that he would come and so I had nothing but time to spare. Let’s just say, he has everything he should need when he gets here.
I’ll make sure to keep you all updated on this process. For the sake of his privacy, I will not mention his name or the reason he came to stay with me. Thank you for the support!
